August Cotton shouldn’t be here. When a tragic accident
calls him home to Magnolia Springs, this returned Veteran adds his parents to
the list of things he’s lost in recent years, right along with his IED
detection dog and his left leg. As the sole guardian of his four-year-old
sister, August must rely on his Marine training in raising a tiny hellion who’s
as stubborn as he is. But the Corps could never prepare him for this. Nor could
they prepare him for Olivia Anders, a woman who’ll stop at nothing to get her
way.

As owner of Paws for Cause, Olivia is no stranger to the
broken men and women who return home from war. She’s no stranger to broken dogs
either. In fact, she’s made it her mission to pair the two and enrich both of
their lives, but pairing ornery and aloof August Cotton will take some work.
The last thing August wants is some pushy southern woman occupying his parents’
bed and breakfast and forcing him to open up about the hell he narrowly
escaped, but that’s exactly what Olivia intends.

They complete one another, and yet they can’t stand to be in
the same room.

Can Olivia make this hardened Marine feel again and finally
show his heart the way back home?

Excerpt

“You know, if you want to see me naked and sweaty, all you have to do is
ask, darlin’.”
“I do not . . . I wasn’t . . .” My words are stolen from me as he stalks
forward with a maddening smirk on his face. “What are you doing?”
“Getting tired of waiting for you to be okay with this.”
“August, we talked about boundaries.” I press my hand to his chest
because he’s too close, and I can’t think straight with the heady scent of his
sweat and sandalwood soap distracting me. It wasn’t my intention to run my hand
over that sweat, to feel the hard-won muscle beneath, but here I am, petting
him as if he’s my favorite kitty.
“No. You talked about boundaries. I told you I was gonna fight, and I
ain’t above fightin’ dirty.”
“How dirty?” I breathe.
August’s lips curl up into a smile. “So dirty.”
Both hands snake around my waist and he lifts me onto the counter,
wedging his hips between my thighs. He hooks a finger in the sash and unties my
robe as if he were opening a gift made just for him. I wrap my legs around his
hips to pull him closer, and that’s all the admission he needs. He threads a
hand through my hair and pulls my neck back to expose the tender flesh to his
mouth. I close my eyes and whisper his name as my whole body turns to flame,
starved for the oxygen that only his touch can bring. His hot mouth trails down
my neck, his hands cup my breasts, squeezing, kneading, and I slide a hand
between us, into the waistband of his shorts. I take his hard length in my
hand, stroking him from base to tip. August grunts as he pushes my negligee out
of the way with frenzied hands. His fingers find me bare and exposed with no
panties.
“So fucking’ dirty,” he groans, wetting his lips.

EXCERPT ONE:

There were days that changed your life forever, though at first they felt perfectly ordinary. You got up, you got dressed, you prepared to go to work and Charlie Mike the hell out of the day. Continuing the mission was what Colonel John “Viper” Mendez lived for. Every day he sent teams around the world to save pieces of it, and every night he went to bed knowing that tomorrow would be more of the same.

He lived for the mission. He played sometimes, but not often, and when it was over he went back to work. He’d been doing it for so long that it was normal and expected. If he got up tomorrow and didn’t have a mission, he’d probably go out of his mind.

But today… Today there was still a mission.

Mendez—he’d long ago stopped thinking of himself by any name but that one—watched the news while he got dressed and fielded the usual calls about operations and statuses. His aide pulled up to the curb at precisely five-thirty a.m., and Mendez prepared to walk out the door.

His phone rang again and he lifted it to his ear with a clipped “Mendez.”

“Good morning, colonel,” a cheerful voice said.

Mendez stopped. “Black? What’s up?” Because Ian Black never called unless there was something important going on. Something that Mendez would want to hear.

“I’m saving your ass today, colonel.”

Lieutenant Connor waited patiently in the car as Mendez stared out the window. “What does that mean?”

“It means I’ve got news you need to hear. Today, around nine a.m., the military police will arrive at HOT HQ. They’ll be accompanied by a general officer who’s there to relieve you of command. They’ll probably arrest you, by the way.”

A boulder formed in his gut. It wasn’t fear. It was fury. “Why? And where did you hear this?”

“Why? Because Vice President DeWitt has finally convinced the president that you’re dangerous and need to be stopped.”

That little motherfucker. He’d been after HOT for the last couple of years. Being President Campbell’s running mate in a successful election had elevated him to a position he’d only dreamed about—and given him the power to do things he hadn’t had as a junior congressman.

“I’m not worried. The president’s daughter is married to one of my operators. Campbell won’t let HOT be defanged, and I can handle an inquiry.”

“This isn’t an inquiry, John. It’s a witch hunt. And I can’t tell you where I heard it, but trust me, it’s real. The president is caving in to pressure, whether he wants to or not.”

Ian had never called him by his first name in all the time they’d known each other. Black was a mystery, a disavowed CIA agent who wasn’t disavowed at all in Mendez’s opinion. He was deep undercover, so deep that Mendez couldn’t figure out who his handler was in the CIA. He’d questioned Samantha Spencer, the on again off again agent he had sex with, but she claimed not to know anything. Still, Mendez hadn’t forgotten how her fingers trembled that first time he’d asked.

“I still gotta go to work. Not showing up is an admission of wrongdoing, don’t you think?”

“No. I think it’s smart. Run while you can. Far better to work on exposing the truth than to be locked up and at their mercy.”

Jesus H. Christ. What a clusterfuck. Maybe he should run, but it wasn’t the way he was wired. Besides, he wasn’t helpless. A general and a few MPs weren’t enough to stop him if he really wanted to get away. He’d been in black ops far too many years to be helpless.

“You do things your way and I’ll do them mine.”

Ian Black sighed. “Your funeral,” he said. “But I think you should know something else.”

Mendez’s patience hung on by a thread. “What?”

“Katya wants you to run.”

“Who the fuck is Katya?”

“Ekaterina. She says you knew her sister. She said you’ll recognize her name.”

Everything inside him went still. It couldn’t be the name that sprang immediately to mind. He’d searched in the year since Dmitri Leonov had told him she wasn’t dead, but he’d found nothing. A sister? He didn’t remember Valentina talking about a sister. Must be someone else, yet still he hoped. “What name?”

“Valentina.”

Ice coated his veins, stilled his blood. Someone was fucking with him. Baiting him. Hoping he’d do something rash. Hell, it could even be Leonov. Who, true to his word, had gotten sprung from an American prison within months of being captured. It could also be Sergei Turov, who against all odds had survived the bullet Dex “Double Dee” Davidson put in him last year. He’d even learned to walk again. Now that man had an axe to grind for sure.

But rash was not how Mendez operated. Ever. He wasn’t called Viper because he reacted too quickly. No, he was Viper because his strike was silent and deadly.

“That name means nothing to me,” he said.

“Doesn’t it? Valentina Alexandrovna Rostov. Katya says you have a locket that belonged to her sister. Bring it to the Court of Two Sisters in New Orleans. Tomorrow morning, ten-thirty sharp. Ball’s in your court.”

The line went dead.

EXCERPT TWO (RACY WITH LANGUAGE):

Katya had dropped her backpack and fished out guns and ammunition. She was currently checking her weapons. She looked up at him, one delicate eyebrow arching. Her beauty was a grenade to his brain. A lightning rod to his cock. He wanted to fuck her and it pissed him off. He’d been with her less than eight hours and he wanted to strip her naked and make her scream his name.

He hadn’t had sex in months now, not since he’d broken it off with Sam. He wasn’t the kind of man who could walk into a bar and pick up a woman for a night of casual sex. At his rank, and with his job, it wasn’t wise. Foreign governments sent spies for just such occasions. Seduce the commanders, get information. Happened all the time, even though it seemed like a plot out of a bad spy movie. He’d seen it more than once. Idiots who should know better had their heads turned by free pussy—and lost their careers over it.

Therefore, he did not fuck around lightly. Even when the sexual drought took its toll and he was so sick to death of his hand he couldn’t even work up the enthusiasm to jerk himself off.

“Where did you find this place?” Katya asked.

He dragged his brain back from the brink of a full-blown waking fantasy. He’d been about to undress her and see if she tasted as hot as she looked. See if she had a fucking scar on her left thigh. He still wasn’t convinced that she didn’t.

Safer for her if she didn’t. Safer for him, too. Because he’d go fucking ballistic if she had that scar. If she was Valentina instead of an identical twin. He couldn’t even imagine what kind of person she’d have to be to lie for twenty-one years. To let him think she was dead and buried.

“We’re safe here, don’t worry,” he said roughly.

“That’s what I thought at the other place. Turns out it wasn’t true.”

“We won’t be here long.”

She shot him a questioning look. “Really? Where are we going?”

“You’ll know when we get there.”

Book Review: Crazy Is My Superpower by AJ Mendez Brooks

Crazy Is My Superpower: How I Triumphed by Breaking Bones, Breaking Hearts, and Breaking the RulesCrazy Is My Superpower: How I Triumphed by Breaking Bones, Breaking Hearts, and Breaking the Rules by A.J. Mendez Brooks

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A.J. Mendez Brooks will blow you away with her writing debut. She was able to write about her life, her struggles with mental illness, her dream to be a superhero in a honest, quirky, and brave manner. She tackled just about everything in this book. I applaud A.J. for being so honest with readers, fans, and ultimately herself. I bet it wasn’t easy to sit down and go through your toughest and most emotional moments, but she was able to go with so much class and sass! Crazy Is My Superpower was inspiring in more ways than one. It focused on the importance of equality between men and women, showed girls to embrace who they are, highlighted mental illness in two perspective; in the eyes of a person struggling with it and in the eyes of seeing someone close to you deal with it as well, all while battling any thing or person who tried to stop her from accomplishing her dreams.

I have been of fan of April’s, more famously known as WWE superstar AJ Lee, and felt like I connected with her even more through this book. She always knew that she wasn’t like most girls let alone most individuals. She was a proud Buffy loving, video gaming, smartass human being. Although she was comfortable in her own skin, A.J. talked about the struggles that came along with her image both socially and professionally. I loved how she stood up for herself even when others wanted to change her.

Is A.J. Mendez Brooks a “good girl”? This was a struggle she talked about deeply in the book. She was brought up in a way that made her question the way she acted towards individuals. Because of this she was forced to grow up very quickly. She was able to depict examples from her childhood and educated us on why she thought the way she did. It was very emotional to read. I can’t imagine how much stress that would add to a teenage girl, but I understand both sides to the story. This is what is so appealing about this book. It is relatable.

She also talked a great deal about mental illness. It is such an important topic that many don’t view as a real illness. A.J. beautifully schools us on mental illness by writing about her mother who struggled from bipolar disorder. Her ability to write with such honesty and raw emotion will no doubt be a healing mechanism for so many. I commend April for writing about this in her book.

And can I can’t forget to mention how freaking hilarious this woman is. She continues to bring up the age difference between her and her husband with grace and humor. Although I am sure this is just her personality, she uses humor as a healing mechanism. She uses it when she was in her toughest times and even in awkward situations.

I loved this book from page 1 to page 271. I loved that she embraced her nerdy, confident, and smartass self. Her never give up attitude is inspirational. She made a list of goals and she wouldn’t rest until she accomplished it all. She reminds us all that dreaming big isn’t impossible. She wanted to be a superhero and guess what…SHE IS! Although her love for wrestling, family, and dogs is awesome to read about, my favorite part was reading about her attitude towards people in general. She isn’t one to judge you based on what you are wearing or what kind of car you are driving. This book highlighted her self discover and learned that being crazy is a bad thing. Vince McMahon even commented on her level of crazy once.

“You’re really good at playing crazy,” Vince McMahon, the owner of the company, told me after I returned backstage from an in-ring temper tantrum. But to me, I wasn’t playing crazy. I was discovering my superpower.”

She always knew that she was different and was okay with that. All she had to do was make people see that it was okay too. And she did!

If you can take away anything from this book, please know this

“What I learned was that the key to success was going to be showing my genuine emotion, being open and hoses. When you can accept and be proud of your flaws, they will become your greatest strengths.”

REAL DEAL

(Single Dads Club #1)

A Sexy RomCom Standalone

EXCERPT

There are at least ten camp counselors currently standing in the water watching the children, and six of them are female. Victor doesn’t understand the epidemic he’s going to have on his hands. The longer I sit there, the more dads find their way down to the lake, thinking it’s an everyday Thursday pickup. To their surprise, it’s a teenage boy’s wet dream. And maybe that teenage boy’s dad’s, too.

Caterina is laughing with another female counselor. I never noticed how her cheeks rise into two small apples when she smiles. Nor did I notice the way her hands cover her mouth to stifle a laugh or how she briefly touches the other person’s arm when she’s amused. Damn, I want to pull that reaction out of her.

But all I’ve gotten this week since camp started is a few polite smiles and ‘hello Mr. Kent.’ She hasn’t acted as though I’ve seen more of her than what that bikini she’s wearing reveals.

“What did I miss?” Dane sits down next to me, trying to catch his breath.

“What the hell do you do all day that you can’t be here on time?”

He glances over to me and then concentrates ahead of him. I can’t blame him, we don’t get views like this in Climax Cove very often.

“Does Victor realize he’s giving every dad here beat off material for tonight?” Dane asks. A few of the dads milling about laugh, knowing it’s true.

A small ball of anger begins brewing in my center. The idea of these dickheads thinking about what’s under the blue bikini hugging Cat’s tits gets under my skin. That beat off material is for me and only me.

“And to answer your question, I had to go down to the county for some paperwork.”

Dane’s been doing some heavy renovations to Happy Daze the last few years, expanding and making it a more family-friendly bar and grill during the day.

“Sorry, that sucks.”

Both of us continue our conversation as we pretend to watch our children. I can multitask though. My gaze veers to Lily to make sure she’s not drowning, but she’s taken swimming lessons since she was one, so I don’t have to worry too much.

“We can talk about that shit later.” Dane waves me off. “Fuck, this is so not fair. How is my kid getting more action than I’ve seen this week?” He bites his fist, watching Toby and his friends pour a bucket of water over his camp counselor’s head. Her yellow bikini doesn’t exactly hide the fact the water might have been slightly chilly.

Lily looks away from the action in the lake, finds me sitting there, and smiles. “Why do I suddenly feel dirty?” I mumble to myself.

Lily runs from the lake and Caterina says something to one of the other counselors and follows Lily’s path. Our eyes lock, but Cat is quick to shift her focus elsewhere.

“Daddy!” Lily screams and jumps into my arms, soaking me in the process.

“Hi, sweetie.” I prop her on my knee.

“Hi, Uncle Dane,” her sweet voice says.

I clear my throat so he’ll turn his attention from the lake to my daughter. Dane turns to me, back to the lake, and then realizes why I’m clearing my throat.

“Hey, kiddo. Swim day, huh?” He leans back on his hands, focusing his attention on her.

“Come.” She jumps down from my lap and grabs my hand.

“No, sweetie. I’ll wait until you’re done. Go have fun with your friends.”

She smiles and runs off.

“Damn, a little warning, huh? I’m practically tucking my dick between my legs,” Dane says and shifts in his seat.

“Um, how do you think I feel?”

“Who’s the dickhead?” Dane asks, head nodding to the lake.

One of the male camp counselors approaches Cat. She laughs at his joke and shakes her head. I don’t miss the way his eyes light up when she puts her hand on his forearm.

“Who?” I pretend my heart isn’t skipping beats from the adrenaline coursing through my system. Just call me a fucking caveman.

“Yeah, okay. Your eyes have been glued to one counselor, in particular, this whole week.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” I glance around to make sure no other parents overheard us.

“Is that how you’re gonna play it?” he asks, turning toward me and raising his eyebrows in question.

I say nothing, watching the dickhead pick up Caterina by the waist, her squealing and him dropping her in the deeper part of the lake. She stands up and now she’s dripping wet in her blue bikini that probably matches the color of my balls.

Once again, I swear her gaze veers over to me as she pushes her hands through her drenched hair. Before I can be certain, she’s concentrating on the kids again. She claps her hands and announces swim time is over for her group.

“Man, your chick is a fun sponge,” Dane says because Toby’s camp counselor is still in a water battle with her kids.

I push off the picnic table to head over to pick up Lily and gather her things.

Real Deal (Single Dads Club #1)Real Deal by Piper Rayne

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I just finished reading Real Deal and it was the real deal! I FLoved this book.

description

Piper Rayne knows how to deliver! This book was sexy as sin, hilariously awkward, and featured a hot single dad who put his daughter first. Swoon. Ladies, get ready to book your trip to Climax Cove!

Caterina wasn’t the young and naive girl she was 6 years ago. She had big things happening in her career, but she needed to make a trip and volunteer at a camp before committing to a life she wasn’t sure she truly wanted. Cat became a camp counselor and connected with a young girl Lily. Lily happened to remind her of her past. That past meaning Marcus Kent. description
Marcus Kent was a single dad who had one thing on his mind; protecting his daughter Lily. He was yummy to look at, but no woman would hold his attention long enough to even say the word “relationship”. Walking with his daughter to the first day of camp, had his groin cleavage begging for action 😉 As soon as he saw the girl who threw herself at him, he knew he couldn’t pass up this opportunity once again.

Cat and Marcus had a 10 year age difference, but was age just a number? Could he finally treat and respect Cat as the grown woman she was or still see her at the young girl he briefly knew? Was Cat going to pretend like nothing happened and move on?

So many questions that will be answered in time. You are guaranteed a laugh and cry after reading Real Deal. It will leave you searching for a Single Dad’said Club near you haha but seriously. These two were magical..like a UNICORN! And when Lily wants a mommy, she better get a mommy.

Book Review: The Whole Thing Together by Ann Brashares

If you are a fan of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, then you are a fan of Ann Brashares! Here is a synopsis of her latest release The Whole Thing Together.

SYNOPSIS

A beautifully written novel about love, class differences, and betrayal playing out over the course of a fractured American family’s Long Island summer from  #1 New York Times bestselling author Ann Brashares, author of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series.

“A gorgeously written novel on love, loss and family.” —NICOLA YOON, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Everything, Everything

Summer for Sasha and Ray means the sprawling old house on Long Island. Since they were children, they’ve shared almost everything—reading the same books, running down the same sandy footpaths to the beach, eating peaches from the same market, laughing around the same sun-soaked dining table. Even sleeping in the same bed, on the very same worn cotton sheets. But they’ve never met.

Sasha’s dad was once married to Ray’s mom, and together they had three daughters: Emma, the perfectionist; Mattie, the beauty; and Quinn, the favorite. But the marriage crumbled and the bitterness lingered. Now there are two new families—and neither one will give up the beach house that holds the memories, happy and sad, of summers past.

The choices we make come back to haunt us; the effect on our destinies ripples out of our control . . . or does it? This summer, the lives of Sasha, Ray, and their siblings intersect in ways none of them ever dreamed, in a novel about family relationships, keeping secrets, and most of all, love.

Sounds so good right? It really was! In fact, I read it all in one sitting and had to read it a second time just to make sure I didn’t miss anything! Hope you enjoy my review and Happy Reading!

REVIEW

The Whole Thing Together is a beautifully written story about family, loss, and growing together as a family while bringing attention to the sensitive topic of race and prejudice. Ann Brashares never ceases to amaze me with her writing ability. If her words were a picture, she would capture each moment perfectly. There was family drama that was as big as the beach..maybe even bigger. The characters are fantastic and make you hopeful even when they are at their lowest points.

No family is perfect and this family does not try to pretend to be. The story focuses on the relationship between Sasha and Ray. They share just about everything everything except siblings. Things get more interesting because they have never met. Each of their respective families rotate on sharing a house, which doesn’t scream unity! Both 17 years old, these two have to deal with so many emotions while trying to finally bring their families together. Are these two mature enough to handle the hardships of a fractured family? The development and growth of both Ray and Sasha is a joy to read. They remind us all the importance of accepting others no matter the gender, race, or religious beliefs.

I applaud Ann Brashares for not being afraid to talk about the topic of race. Most of the characters in this family were White and some were of a different color/race. She portrayed a family who was not accepting of race and magnified the struggles to fit into your OWN family. What would you do if you felt separated by your own family? Would it affect the love you had for them?

No matter what obstacles these characters faced, they continued to be a family whether they wanted to admit it or not. Every family has their secrets, but owning up to them can really promote growth. This family goes through it all, but reading about their journey is nothing short of uplifting. This book makes you feel hopeful even after this family is shattered.

Whether it’s an alpha male, heavy angst, a happily ever after, there’s something you are absolutely certain the book will contain. Heck, we’re readers, too, we get it.

What can we tell you about ourselves? We both have kindle’s full of one-clickable books. We’re both married to husbands who drive us to drink. We’re both chauffeurs to our kids. Most of all, we love hot heroes and quirky heroines that make us laugh, and we hope you do, too.
