Jane of Austin was brewed to perfection. The story of three sisters facing obstacles left and right and still finding a way to overcome it was beautifully written by Hillary Manton Lodge. The journey was unique and nothing short of extraordinary. Everything is bigger in Texas and the Woodward sisters found that out.
A father’s mistakes forced the Woodward sisters to move and change their lives. Their reputation was tarnished just by association. The sisters did not want to break up their family so made a choice to stick together. Celia, Jane, and Margot decided to open a tea shop. It wasn’t their plan, but made it work for almost 5 years. Then, with landlord changes, they were forced to start over again. Off to Texas they went. To say Jane was hesitant would be an understatement. But the family and people they met couldn’t have been more generous. Their only family member known to them, Ian, gives them a place to stay in Austin. He is great along with his mother-in-law. Yeah about his wife..not so great. Nina, his mother-in-law, promises the girls a memorable time saying, “You’re here now, at least. You’ll both be engaged in a year; mark my words.”
There is another houseguest too. Callum Beckett. He is a war hero who lost one of his legs in war. He comes back home an accident. He is now the owner of restaurants and his parent’s estate. He has a hard time coming to terms with his accident and it is understandable. He doesn’t feel worthy of love even when he sees the beautiful and unique Jane. He knows she has met a musician who saved her and her sisters. His name is Sean Willis. Even though he is getting feelings, he feel like he isn’t worthy.
“I’m an amputee with a chain of failing restaurants. Let Jane have Sean. He’ll do her more good than I wood.” Callum
Jane was the sister that was worried most about this change. But after catching feelings for Sean Willis, very quickly i might add, her opinions of Austin seem to change.
“It’s good to have dreams. But sometimes dreams change, or take different forms, or you go down a path and realize that while it’s not the beach, you really like the forest.”-Jane
Sean and Jane seem to be the perfect couple, but it isn’t always the case. Their relationship is fast and everyone can see how in love they are. But circumstances change and Jane once again feels incomplete. After more tragedy, she finds herself in the arms of Callum. They always had a connection, but she was unavailable at the time. Is Callum the one?
I really enjoyed this story. It was about people learning about their self-worth. From Jane to Celia to Callum. They all had been through tough times, but had to make a choice. Did they want to move forward and push through? Ultimately, it was their decision to this question that would either hinder or benefit their growth. I loved the characters, the story, and the recipes. Such a fun book that you need to read.
