Movie Review: The Shack

Sometimes bad things happen to good people. And sometimes good people do bad things. But who are we to judge?

The Shack was a spiritual experience that will have you thinking about your problems and look forward to moving past them. It was tear-jerking, uplifting, and one of my favorite movies of 2017. The story of Mack Phillips and his struggle with his faith will hit home for so many.

Mack Phillips didn’t grow up in the greatest of households. He had a mother who loved him and a father who was abusive when he drank too much. A young boy should not have to worry if he or his mother will be say in his own home, but life isn’t perfect. Mack’s mother turned to her religion and Mack did too. But he struggled with the questions of “Is God good?” and “If He is good, why is there bad in the world”.

As he grew up and started his own family, his past stayed with him. Although he tried not to let it dictate his life, it shaped many of his beliefs and decisions.

Summer was ending and a trip to the lake with his kids was arriving. A tragic accident changed Mack’s life forever. He spiraled and went into a depression mode. He was living his life by simply going through the motions and his past was coming back to him. Did he have faith? Did he believe in God (Papa)? Was he being punished?

The inner struggle was breaking him and affecting everyone around him. He received a mysterious letter in the mail asking him to go back to a place he never wanted to see again, the Shack. Would going back give him the closure he so desperately needed? Only God knows, but he took the first steps and went. He went and was initially disappointed to go and see no one. Then, a young man appeared and led him down a path. It was truly marvelous. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, and the trees and flowers were exquisite. It was like something out of a photographer’s amazing nature shot. When he went in, his faith definitely damaged. He faced his biggest fears even when he didn’t he could.

Mack found himself staying in a beautiful sanctury with 3 beings. Papa, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. His journey was emotional, spiritual, and never lacked in love. They were able to be the “person” he needed at each time of his journey. He was never alone to face his inner demons. When he started his journey, his faith was weak. But when he was done heΒ  came out a stronger man who knew the importance of faith and forgiveness.

I was impressed with the cast. Sam Worthing was remarkable. He allowed me to feel every emotion of the character as if I was experiencing everything too. Besides Mack, Missy Phillips (AmΓ©lie Eve) was one of my favorite characters. She was a breath of fresh air. She was just a kid being a kid. She asked lots of questions which probably made her wiser than her age. I can’t forget about the amazing Octavia Spencer who played Papa. She was so important in Mack’s growth spiritually and emotionally. The casting was great. It was a joy to watch every character and how they played an important role in Mack’s life.

The Shack was remarkable in every way. I believe this movie strengthened my faith even more and is great for those who believe in the Lenten season. If you have ever had a hard time in your life, whether it be a loss of small or large proportions, you can relate to this movie. It showed the importance of forgiveness. Forgiveness is so necessary for the healing process. Another important topic was judgement. Mack judged everyone in the world around him, even when he didn’t know he was doing it. This movie brought up the question “Who are we to judge”. If He created the world we live in today, why do we think we are in charge. By asking these questions, Mack was able to realize that God is not bad because he let’s evil happen. He gave everyone the ability to choose and can’t stop anyone from making their choices. No matter what, His love for us never stops. Sam Worthington portrayed Mack so beautifully and did his character justice.

I give this movie 5 stars.

Movie Review: Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates

Hot and talented (in their own way) brothers + the realest fake girlfriends you’ve ever met + turtle power = A WEDDING TO REMEMBER

Mike and Dave (Zac Efron) are young, adventurous, fun-loving brothers who tend to get out of control at family gatherings. When their sister Jeanie reveals her Hawaiian wedding plans, the rest of the Stangles insist that the brothers bring respectable dates. After placing an ad on Craigslist, the siblings decide to pick Tatiana and Alice, two charming and seemingly normal women. Once they arrive on the island, however, Mike and Dave realize that their companions are ready to get wild and party.

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates will have you laughing from beginning to end. We’ve got to say, Adam Devine stole the show. His timing and delivery is spot on. The casting is seriously so perfect. If you saw Zac Efron and Adam Devine at a wedding, we have no doubt that they could pass as real life bros. Mike and Dave are the life of just about every party, but hilariously perfect at ruining family events. When the Stangles bring this up at a family intervention meeting, the guys have a hard time coming to terms with the accidental havoc they cause. The guys have a soft spot for their sister Jeanie, and they agree to bring “sweet and respectable” dates. Their ad on Craigslist goes viral and we meet Tatiana and Alice. Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza put the FUN in dysfunctional. Let’s just say it’s a wedding full of booze, pretending, and more booze. The boys have met their match in the wild, spontaneous, yet insecure women. The film is definitely great and full of witty, sexual, and all around comical writing. The comedy is there, yet it still maintains a sucessful storyline. Be prepared to laugh your socks off, experience some hilarious intimate scenes, and recognize the unique similarities between your siblings/friends with the characters (the similarites may be good, but we make no promises πŸ˜‰ ).Β
